Season 2.2: Episode 009: The Devil and Dr. Beck
All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast: The Devil and Dr. Beck
The All That’s Holy Blue Collar Podcast: Episode 009 – Richard Beck and the Devil
In this episode, still close to the New Year’s beginning, we talk about New Year’s resolutions. Remarkably, Justin is non-New-Years-resolver. Along with our regular banter, which usually tilts toward politics or theology, we pick up on early impressions of the Trump administration and follow-up with a Two-Minute warning considering the positives of a Donald Trump presidency. We make a few passing references to our need to upgrade our tech (including getting Justin a new mic) for the podcast. Click the donate button to help us along the way!
We also talk about the devil.
Craig has a conversation with psychologist and theologian, Richard Beck. Richard Beck is an author, speaker, blogger and Professor of Psychology at Abilene Christian University. Beyond his books --Unclean, The Slavery of Death, and Reviving Old Scratch--Richard's published research covers topics as diverse as the psychology of profanity to judgments of Christian art to attachment to God. Every Monday Richard leads a bible study for fifty inmates at the maximum security French-Robertson unit. And Monday-Friday on his popular blog Experimental Theology Richard will spend enormous amounts of time writing about the theology of Johnny Cash, the demonology of Scooby-Doo or his latest bible class on monsters.

Season 2.1 Episode 8: Getting the Band Back Together
Season 2.1 Getting the Band Back Together
Season 2.1 Getting the Band Back Together
We’re on a mission from God
So we've gotten the band back together after a three-month break. Cody largely takes the blame for the longer than expected break. Justin and Craig are fine with that. But the point is, the band is back together - and we're on a "mission from God". Really!
Our new format will be more timely. Even ahead of time - we recorded our New Year's episode before Christmas. Also, we're going to spend less time editing by recording in a single take.
Overwhelmed with the time planning, recording, and editing takes, we fell behind our podcasting schedule. Our new format for publishing our podcasts will work better with our mixed-up schedules and outstandingly complicated lives.
What Didn’t Survive 2016 and What Might Return
Dead celebrities and the death of truth. We’ve made it through a post-truth and post-Bowie world, 2016 is gone and time to get ready for 2017. Hoping 2017 is better. We make Super Bowl predictions during the Two Minute Warning, which goes way beyond two minutes, which as a disclaimer, Craig could not foresee the season ending injury for Derek Carr.
Interview: Pitchers and Catchers Report
Craig has a conversation with college baseball player, Tyler Winkler, pitcher at Big Bend Junior College, in Moses Lake, Washington. While not everyone is thinking about baseball today, our interview guest, Tyler Winkler likely is. Tyler and Craig recorded this conversation in early October of 2016, in which Tyler predicted the Cubs would make to the World Series; and he was right! Tyler and Craig talk about their decade-long friendship, the challenges of being a student-athlete, and what the future looks like for Tyler and other JUCO athletes.
Music in this Episode
Cody thought it was appropriate to go with a selection off of both Leonard Cohen's and David Bowie's last albums, respectively. Cody writes, "Weird how they both had releases for 2016, planned and everything. And Bowie had a song called "Lazarus" on his, and Cohen had a song where he says, in Jewish, 'Here I am' and then right after that, in English, 'I'm ready, my lord.'"
Leonard Cohen, the title track from Cohen’s final album, You Want It Darker, released October 21, 2016 only days before his death on November 7, 2016. On Itunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/you-want-it-darker/id1154144036
Dropkick Murphys, "Blood", on 11 Stories of Pain & Glory, On Itunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/11-short-stories-of-pain-glory/id1168994342 . The Dropkick Murhpys one was really appropriate for our "getting the band back together," because the section of their new song has the lyrics: "We're coming for you/We'll kick down the door/Be careful what you ask for/Cause you may get more/Gonna keep it loud/We don't turn down/We're coming back/We're taking over this town". That's a lot to live up to.
David Bowie, "Lazarus" from David Bowie’s final album Blackstar, released just two days before his death on January 10, 2016. On Itunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/blackstar/id1059043043

Episode 007 of The All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast with C. Christopher Smith
As always, remember...
DISCLAIMER: Profound things will be said, but it will be entirely by accident.
Our guest on this episode is C. Christopher Smith, author of the book Reading for the Common Good: How Books Help Our Churches and Neighborhoods Flourish, coauthor of the book Slow Church: Cultivating Community in the Patient Way of Jesus, and the editor of “The Englewood Review of Books.” He is an active member of the Englewood Christian Church community on the urban Near Eastside of Indianapolis.
Chris and Cody talk about the local church as an organization in which both learning AND action lie at the heart of its identity. They discuss the practice or reading and how reading together in community can drive the church and surrounding neighborhood into deeper action.
Chris believes that the church can no longer be about passive consumption, but instead should take seriously the church’s call to participatory life with the community. He shares how reading can become a vital practice for helping churches navigate this shift.

Cody, Justin, and Craig wax eloquently about the fun stuff going on in the national political arena. We also hear about Justin's new job (still a blue collar guy). Craig confesses to his struggles with persistence as he slogs through the dissertation process.

#002 Unpolished & Incomplete: an in-between-isode
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week
There is such a thing. There is a week during which appreciation to truck drivers is to be shown. This year (we just missed it, barely), Truck Driver Appreciation week went from September 11-17, 2016. Remember it! If you missed it this year, put it on your calendar and be ready for 2017. Just think, without these transportation officials, we'd have a tough time getting ice cream, beer, dog food, toilet paper, shoe laces, coffee, tires...... To learn more about National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, head to the America Trucking Association website
For this edition of Unpolished & Incomplete, Cody interviews a truck driver- because, what's more blue collar than that? In honor of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week last week, Cody spoke with his own father, Mark Stauffer, a 40 year veteran of the industry who has logged nearly 3 million miles on the road. Listen as they talk the pressure of being an entrepreneur on the road; balancing days on the road with family and civic obligations; knowing when it's time to make a change; growing up and raising a family in VERY remote rural Idaho, and a whole lot more. We appreciate truck drivers at the All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast, who keep the nation moving!

Episode 006: The All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast with Daisy Rain Martin
Episode 006: The All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast

We finish it off with a Two-Minute Warning debating the value of swearing. Go to our Facebook page to add your opinions on the matter.
Also, we're giving away a copy of Daisy Rain Martin's book, Hope Givers: Hope is Here. Here's the deal.

This week we have the pleasure of learning about the life and work of Daisy Rain Martin. Cody's interview with Daisy revolves around one of the most painful and damaging event a person can experience. Daisy's process of turning abuse into hope is life-giving and joyful. Through the journey, Daisy not only finds transformation, but shares the transformation as a Hope Giver. Daisy writes:
"Hope.
It is the best of things. I’ve learned that we Hope Givers are, in fact, quite flawed. We don’t always win. We are scarred and weathered and bruised from life’s battles, and sometimes we even feel as if we are barely getting by, if you want to know the truth. Hope Givers have an absolute willingness to intentionally and deliberately put themselves in close proximity with people who are in pain, for the sole purpose – dare I say, the soul purpose – of pouring hope into the lives of those they love. And even for some they don’t even know. Or don’t even like. In sitting with people in their pain, I’ve come to realize what it truly means to be a Hope Giver...." All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast: Episode 5
all that's holy blue collar podcast: episode 5
Welcome to the All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast
In this episode, Cody becomes startlingly aware of Bart Simpson's lack of aging (raising profound questions about time and preadolescence and Bart's development); Justin inspires political opinion; and Craig talks about the community of people who are there after his most recent crash-test. Our interview in this episode is with Mennonite pastor, Steve Kimes, of Anawim Christian Community in Portland, Oregon's Gresham neighborhood.
Steve Kimes has been creating community for the people of Portland who live without a house. Anawim is not just a church that works with the homeless, it is a church of and for the homeless: " a church made up of the poor and outcast from 'normal' society—the impoverished, the homeless, the mentally ill and those on public assistance," (Anawimcc.org/about). In the extended interview, Steve talks about relationships with the homeless, the police, the neighborhood of Gresham, and introduces us to the lives of the people with whom he works. Steve is also a prolific blogger who writings can be found at http://stevekimes.blogspot.com/. Anawim Christian Community exists on the donations of others. So please go to the donation page for Anawim and see how you can be of help.
Talking about Politics (Who isn't these days?)
We cover a lot of topics in this episode. One of the topics was presidential politics. Our hour long conversation was edited in half, just to save you from our endless opinions. One of the issues covered had to do with the notion of "facts", and a general sense of cynicism regarding political statements and journalism. The following websites are offered as suggestions to help in your digging for facts. I hope they help.
- The Federal Election Commission: Campaign Finance Disclosure
- ProCon.org: The Pros and Cons of Controversial Issues
- Fact Checker from the Washington Post
- FactCheck.org: A Project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center
- PolitiFact: A Project of the Tampa Bay Times
- The Pew Research Center: Religion and Public Life
- OpenSecrets.org: Center for Responsive Politics
Music in This Episode
The musical selections we have on the podcast we review and pass on to you as suggested titles, hopefully exposing you to new artists, or digging up some forgotten tunes from the past. Sometimes they are classics, and sometimes they are new selections from artists who's style and perspective tend to be a bit "blue collar", help us with theological reflection, or we want to give props and introduce to you .
The episode's music and artists:
The Mowgli's: Always a favorite for summer days, The Mowgli's sound like summer and friendships. We heard, You're Not Alone, check out The Mowgli's at: http://www.themowglis.net/#home-section, and check out their merch at: http://mowglis.gomerch.com/. You can also find their music at iTunes.
Branches: Steve Kimes alluded to Branches in his interview. So we thought we'd give them a listen. You heard Tomorrow and Helicopter. Learn more about them at: http://branchesmusic.com/ and look for the merch at: http://branchesmusic.com/store.You can find their music on iTunes.
Bruce Springsteen: What's more "blue collar" than the Boss? In 1978, on Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen brought us The Promised Land. Still worth pondering; "I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm/ Gonna be a twister to blow everything down/ That ain't got the faith to stand its ground/ Blow away the dreams that tear you apart/ Blow away the dreams that break your heart/ Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted" (Google Play Lyrics). Stay updated on The Boss at: http://brucespringsteen.net/ and visit the store. Or, find The Promised Land on iTunes.
Styx: There are not a lot of songs out there about being blue collar, but this is one of them. Blue Collar Man tries to catch some of the desperation of blue collar workers. Still love the sound of the Hammond B3 holding the rhythm down! Styx recorded Blue Collar Man, on the Pieces of Eight album, in 1978. Check out http://styxworld.com/ for more information about the band, and look up the tune on iTunes.

Welcome to the All That's Holy Blue Collar Podcast
What happens when missionally minded folks, who are also into sports and athletics, combine their passions for reading, cooking, and preaching and spend time talking together? Hopefully a thoughtful conversation with unexpected connections: NFL draft and the nature of the Holy Spirit; preaching as outlined in baking recipes; batting averages, what triple-doubles have to do with what it means to be a church of mutual accountability. We are allergic to big words, but not big ideas.
